What is an EPD?
An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardised, verified report that communicates transparent and valid information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle.
An EPD is
- A scientifically based, third-party verified document.
- Created according to international standards.
- Based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – a detailed analysis of a product’s impacts “from cradle to grave,” including raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life, as illustrated in the life cycle below.
How to use EPDs for responsible purchasing
Using an EPD for responsible purchasing means using verified environmental data to make informed, transparent, and sustainable choices when selecting products or materials, considering the impacts in the full product life cycle.
How to use EPDs for ESG-reporting
After purchasing, the EPD can streamline data collection for ESG reporting. With all product data in one PDF, the administrative burden of finding, estimating or calculating impacts of purchased products and services in the full lifecycle can be reduced. ISPs will typically need data for some or all the below ESRS categories if reporting under CSRD or VSME. All of this data is included in the EPD.
Especially, the GHG-emissions are considered important data in reporting. The EPD contains carbon emissions on all different stages for GHG activity-based reporting.

The EPD includes additional environmental information on the specific product and the company, enabling ISPs to make informed decisions.
